Our History
On 16th September 1966, a degree college was established exclusively for Commerce discipline to run in the evening shift, named after the great scientist and philosopher Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, perhaps as a logical conclusion following the first instance of naming the local day college(APC College) after him. The college started its journey as a Co-educational Evening college christened as “ACHARYA PRAFULLA CHANDRA COLLEGE OF COMMERCE” with Pre-University as well as B.Com (Genl.) Course affiliated to the University of Calcutta. B.Com(Honours) in Accountancy course started from 2003. To meet the prolonged students' demand, this college had been rechristened as "Naba Barrackpur Prafulla Chandra Mahavidyalaya" in 2005 which obtained extension of affiliation of four Arts subjects (Bengali, English, History, Political Science) for General Course and BA(Honours) Course in Economics. In the same year there was an introduction of Vocational Course in (X + 2) with Business & Commerce Stream, due to the abolition of H.S. Course (General Stream) in the college. In 2006 extension of affiliation in three more Arts subjects was obtained along with Engineering Technology in Vocational course.
To satisfy the overwhelming need for educational facilities for the children of thousands of refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, who started settling at New Barrackpur Colony, educational institutions of different categories viz. Primary / Secondary Schools and Colleges were set up by a group of local enthusiasts and social workers amongst whom Late Haripada Biswas' name is mention-worthy. Soon a voice was raised that an institution imparting Commerce course was missing for local aspirants who wanted to learn while they earn by studying in the evening. So finally on 16th September 1966, this degree college was established exclusively for Commerce discipline to run in the evening shift, named after the great scientist and philosopher Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy. Undoubtedly, compliments are definitely for those who picked up the name of this personality who had unequivocally encouraged sons of the soil to go for the promotion of business and commerce instead of running after employment alone.
Acharya Prafulla Chandra College of Commerce, New Barrackpore started its journey as a Co-educational Evening College with Pre-University as well as B.Com. (Genl.) Course affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The college classes were originally held in Aharampur Boys' School, a local institution. In 1970, the college was shifted to New Barrackpore Boys' High School premises and continued there till 1974 when it came to occupy its own building in Ward No. 12 which had to be shared by Masunda Girls' High School (New Barrackpore).
Initially the college had to undergo ordeal for paucity of funds and a host of other adversities. In 1990, when the college was brought under the Pay Packet Scheme of the Govt. of West Bengal, the financial problem was partially mitigated. Under the patronage of the then Governing Body of the college, there had been continuous improvement of the facilities, environment and strength of personnel managing the requisite functions of the college. In 2003, there was the introduction of Honours in Management, keeping the earlier Honours in Accountancy intact in the new syllabus of B.Com Course. This was a long standing demand of the students as well as of the locality. There was a change in syllabus in almost all the subjects of Commerce in 2003. Accordingly students were facilitated to get library books with new editions. BA(Honours) course in Bengali and English got started from 2007. BA(Honours) course in History was started from 2010. BA(Honours) course in Political Science and Geography got introduced from 2015. BA(Honours) course in Education started from 2017. It is significant to mention that the two storied new college building was inaugurated and shifted to Ward No. 20 of New Barrackpore Municipality near Bishorpara Railway Station (just 100 metres away from the station which is definitely a great locational advantage for the college) where Day Section was started on and from 17th September, 2007. NBPCM got affiliated to West Bengal State University from the session 2008-2009. Presently havoc construction and beautification work is getting carried out in and around the college premises and our college is going to get a very modern “state –of- the- art” infra-structure very shortly.
